Shop Vac

So this one is much more of a music video than a short but I think the amazing typography animations makes this a great addition to my collection of short films. The song is funny and catchy and the animation was so well done. So enjoy Jonathan Coulton's song Shop Vac.

7:35 de la Mañana

I hate finding really good shorts that I know I've seen before but finding out that I've never posted them. Well, here's one of those.
A woman is following her daily schedule, going to a restaurant at 7:35 in the morning for her breakfast, not doing anything out of the ordinary until she realizes to her horror that all of the other patrons of the restaurant are being held hostage.  Suddenly, the bad guy starts singing to the woman and forcing the other patrons to do the same in this dark, romantic, strangely comedic short film.

Minilogue - Animals

I'm not really sure what is going on here. Lots of blobs dance around and explode and bounce and just do some crazy stuff. I imagine that's what ordinary life would be like if I took a hefty dose of LSD every day. But, I mean, it's kinda fun to watch. Very strange though, so have fun!

Meet Buck

Buck acts like an average teenage boy, well, except he's a deer.  Buck gets up to go to his girlfriend's house, who's a human strangely enough but we won't get into interspecies dating.  So he gets to her house and meets her dad for the first time...who just happens to be a hardcore hunter. Uh oh.  The chase begins and all hilarity ensues.

A teen must learn to understand and accept his brother's mental condition.  Simon must bring his brother, Mark, everywhere he goes.  This can hinder a young man's social life quite a bit; especially one new to a neighborhood interested in making new friends and meeting girls.  Simon must learn to not be ashamed of his brother.

Burn-E

A maintenance robot, Burn-E, is sent to fix a light which which was broken upon impact with a meteor.  This proves to be a rather difficult task for little Burn-E.  Oh and yes, this is a sub-plot within Wall-E in case you couldn't guess.

Ever wonder what life would be like as a shell...with a face...and shoes?  Marcel gives us a short tour of his life.

A little kid, Delmer, gets some of his toys and tools together to build something grand. Who knows what this machine could do?

This is not a short film...

So I know this isn't very much like me but instead of posting a short right now, I am going to let you know about a movie.  Do you remember the short Harvey Krumpet?  Well the makers of that came out with a movie last year and, well, if you liked Harvey Krumpet as much as I did, then you will probably like the movie.  It is called Mary and Max.  I haven't found it online yet, you can look for it if you want, but it is on Netflix. So, yeah, that's it.

Day and Night

Pixar does it once again.  We follow two creatures around, one day and the other night, as they explore the land around them and finally run into each other. Mystified by what day can do to the world and what night can do to the world, they both run around trying to prove to each other that one is better than the other.

The Wilderness Downtown

Ok so this short film is very different from anyone you've ever seen, I guarantee it. It's really interesting, though.
So for the summary.... I guess a younger you (as in the person who is watching the short) is running around your hometown.  And it's kind of a music video at the same time. Very strange. But it's pretty cool, too.  Make sure to have nothing else open on your computer when you watch this and also make sure not to click anything while this is running (except maybe to minimize a not-browser-based pop-up program).

Franz Kafka's The Metamorphosis

Just how did Kafka come up with the idea for The Metamorphosis? Well this short film shows you how.  Following Kafka though his thought process, we learn of his many drafts, his crazy adventures, and the event that triggered it all.
Of course this is fiction, though. Also, this is all about Franz Kafka's The Metamorphosis so if you haven't heard of it or read it or anything, you should go look it up.

Yep, here it finally is, my 100th video post. I hope you enjoy it...it's quite interesting.  Ready for this?
A man in attendance at Harvard Law, Barack Obama, is elected as the president of the Harvard Law Review.  But what he didn't know until he got elected was that all of the Review's leaders are vampires who want to suck Barack Obama's blood and turn him into a vampire.  Oh and it's also a musical.
Weren't expecting that one now were you?

Yellow Cake

A town of bakers is invaded by hungry cats who force the town to bake Yellow Cakes for them.  The baking town is reduced to poverty while to cats splurge and profit off of the Yellow Cakes.  Maybe someone should fight back?

On Time

A man is rejected when proposing to his girlfriend and runs into a man who has a device that can show the future, 30 seconds before it happens. The man finds this interesting and allows himself to fall into this scheme in hopes of bettering his life.
*Note: While this is my 100th post, it is not my 100th short film; this is actually my 98th short film. So we'll do a bit of a celebration in two more.

Love and War

From the director's description: "During her training to become a nurse, Bunny meets, by mere chance, the handsome fighter pilot Bear. Romance ensues and they form a couple. When Bear is about to propose, they are suddenly interrupted by an international conflict. Duty calls and Bear is sent into battle."


Just be warned, this is really an opera so it's in Italian and there are no English subtitles. You can absolutely get the message of the short from the actions and the tone and all but you may not be able to understand exactly what they are saying. Nevertheless, I believe this is really cool.

Mankind is No Island

A film shot only using a cell phone, recording text in ads to make up a poem. This poem comments on the state of two cities, far apart geographically but very close in their traditions and in their hearts.  The poem especially deals with the homeless in both of these cities.

Your Lucky Day

An old man happens to have chosen the winning numbers for the local lottery, winning a multi-million dollar prize.  Suddenly, he becomes the target of a seemingly petty thief that just happened to be in the store, making his rounds so to say, who holds up the old man, with a gun, demanding the lottery ticket.  Gun battles, cover-up plots, and murders ensue as the patrons of the store become involved in a fight for their lives.

Just a note: it is not very often that I happen upon a short of such great value that is not AA winning or anything like that. This was just a lucky find on a blog that I regularly visit. Hopefully you will like it as much as I did.  Although, I do have to say, I am a sucker for violence and plot twists so it could be just a personal preference that makes this short so alluring.  Anyway, I hope you enjoy.  Here is the blog if you would like to check it out.  You may notice that many of the shorts that I feature, if not most, are also covered on this blog, and are covered in much more depth than I ever do with my little summaries.  So I figure I would give my extreme gratitude to the writers of this blog; something that is well overdue.

In South Africa, not long before apartheid ends, a kid of about 12, Thembile, gets a new puppy. They're fast friends, until the White landowner hurts the dog so the dog "will learn." Jump ahead ten years, the dog is very loyal to the White landowner...maybe even too loyal.

A man stuck in traffic calls home on his new cell phone just to check up on things. When his daughter answers, he is horrified to find out that his wife is upstairs with "Uncle Wim." But they don't have an Uncle Wim.

Atama Yama (Mt. Head)

A stingy man who never throws away anything collects cherries from the ground. When eating these cherries, he decides not to waste the pits but to eat them too.  As a result, a cherry tree grows out of his head.

This is also done in a musical style, much like Japanese stories are normally with some very abstract overtones to it.

The ChubbChubbs

The evil ChubbChubbs are on their way to attack a bar on this far away planet and it's the job of a little alien to warn everybody of the incoming doom.  But guess what.  No one listens to him.

MUTO

Animated graffiti around a big city on the walls and buildings and floor. This is really cool and is very similar and made by the same people as the last one. I like this video better though. It's pretty cool and once again it doesn't have much of a discernible story line.

Big Bang Big Boom

Graffiti on walls and buildings move around and become animated.  No real story line but it's still pretty cool. Although it might just be me but it's a bit dizzying.

The Moon and the Son

After his father died, John Canemaker still had a lot of questions for him.  This short film documentary is a made-up interview between John and his father trying to tell the story of his life and answer some pressing questions.
Now this may sound pretty boring but I actually found it to be very interesting. The way it is told, revealing only portions of the story at a time as if keeping a secret and the way animation is used to tell the story are just great.

Viaje a Marte (Journey to Mars)

A little boy goes on an adventure with his grandpa who says he is taking them to Mars.

Ward 13

Ben is taken to hospital. After waking up, Ben realizes that he's being held in an experimental hospital where everything is mysterious. After seeing one experimental patient in the next room, Ben realizes that it is time to get out of the hospital as soon as possible.

A man doesn't have enough money to pay for his meal so he becomes desperate, attempting a number of schemes to pay for his food.

Instead of Abracadabera

So this one I could only find in parts, sorry about that. But just like my last post, this one is really great.  This one didn't win but was a nominee for the 2009 Live Action Short Film Oscar.
Thomas, 25, unemployed and still living at home with his parents in Sweden, considers himself a big-time magician. Attempting his trick on and before his parents in the living room, Thomas constantly has to revise his act.  When a pretty nurse moves in next door, Thomas turns on his awkward charms and attracts her with his magic.

The New Tenants

I've finally found it online! This is a really amazing short film, winner of the 2009 Oscar for Live Action Short Films.
This short begins with the arrival of two new tenants into an apartment building, a very common occurrence, but what the two men don't realize is what happened before they arrived at the apartment complex. Guns, drugs, murders, and a little old lady make this film one crazed and unexpected thrill ride where every second something happens to take you by complete surprise.  I really suggest you watch this.

A quoi ca sert l'amour

A lonely young man finds himself a nice gal, only discovers there's more to her and relationships. All to the song by Edith Piaf of the same title.

Dug's Special Mission

An extra to the Pixar movie "Up," this short shows what Dug was doing before we meet him in the movie.  This also works as a funny stand-alone short although it's better if you've seen the movie.

Reach

A robot discovers that the world is just out of his reach.

The Black Hole

A man working late in an office discovers a black hole that his printer created when it malfunctions.  The man plays around with the black hole, at first astonished but then making use of it to satisfy man's greed.

Balance

Strange men work together to keep a platform in space from tipping over and must move around to balance it.  Everything is going well until greed is brought into the situation and new motives arise.
Claymation (Yeah, this one is kinda strange but not too bad)

Apricot

A new couple go out to dinner and talk about their memories of their first kiss and their first love.  The woman goes along telling her stories until she realizes something very strange about the man.

Glory at Sea

A great flood has devastated a small town and the survivors are left searching for their loved ones. One survivor washes ashore, and the town skeptics believe him to be the devil. He begins constructing a boat to sail to the underwater afterlife to be reunited with his lost lover. Slowly the various townsfolk come to his side as they yield to hope of bringing back their loved ones. One by one, they begin to bring their most precious items to help construct the boat then all hop aboard for the journey out to sea.

Crash! Bang! Wallow?

Crash! Bang! Wallow? is the tale of ex-stuntman Larry LeTan and his fight to find a place in modern world. At the height of his career Larry rubbed shoulders with Hollywood superstars of the 80s. As stuntman to the most popular action heroes, he did all the things the stars couldn't or wouldn't do. However, with the introduction of computer technology Larry finds himself out of synch with the modern world.

Om Natten (At Night)

So first I have to say, I really enjoyed this film. It is really really good and I definitely suggest you watch it. It is very sad though so if you don't want to watch a sad film, come back later when you do want to. Because you're going to watch this.
Anyway:

Three girls celebrate New Years together in a cancer ward.  They all have had recent developments in their cancer so they must stay at the ward while most of the other patients are at home with their parents.  The three girls become great friends and swap stories of what it is like to cope with their disease. A hospital is what you make of it- it can be very depressing or it can be a new, great adventure to a better life and better relationships.

A new, crazy substitute makes the class do very strange things for a grade and teaches them a lesson they will not soon forget.

An office clerk wants to learn how to tango in order to impress his new date.  He enlists a colleague who was formerly a dance teacher to help him learn the steps.

The Periwig Maker

Europe during the plague years. A wigmaker, locked in his shop, observes the events and writes about them in his journal. Bodies are everywhere and a sick young girl sneaks out at night to observe the downtrodden city.  The girl get progressively sicker and when she dies, the wigmaker goes to her grave and makes a wig from it.

Even Pigeons Go to Heaven

The story of an old man, close to death, trying to make the decision of where to go when he dies.  Two salesman come to his house and compete for the man's soul after he dies, going so far as to offer him a sneak peek into the afterlife.

A lonely woman working at a men's bathroom in Russia discovers flowers left for her by a mystery man. She spends the whole day looking for him and things start to look dreary.

Making fun of others is never a good thing. A bunch of small birds tease a big bird but eventually the big bird comes out on top.

Every Child

A baby enters life and gets passed from house to house, from crazy family to crazy family.  Each of which, after a short period of time, decide they don't want the baby and pass him off to the next house.

Silence is Golden

Billy and his Mom live next door to a man, Dennis, who clearly has something up with him. He spends his time knocking on the wall, driving his mom crazy. Mom and son think he's a retard. But Billy likes to torment him and hence Dennis's banging, you get the feeling that the situation has gone on years before the film begins. As Billy's antics get bigger so do Billy's own fears which are not too far behind.

The Danish Poet

Kasper, a poet whose creative well has run dry, on a holiday to Norway to meet the famous writer, Sigrid Undset. As Kasper's quest for inspiration unfolds, it appears that a spell of bad weather, an angry dog, slippery barn planks, a careless postman, hungry goats and other seemingly unrelated factors might play important roles in the big scheme of things after all.

Tar Boy

In a world where robots rule, two classes are formed: the slave robots and the rich robots. The rich robots put the slave robots to work for some time but eventually figure out a way to do their work without them and throw all of the slave robots into a tar pit.  But the memory chips of the slave robots all survived and the angry memories collect themselves into one being who arises from the tar: Tar Boy! Bent on revenge, Tar Boy hunts down to kill all of the rich robots that doomed the lives of the slave robots.

But unfortunately, this granny was tormented by a lifetime of rage against the world and everyone in it and passes on this rage to her grandchild in the form of a fairy-tale.

Logorama

So this just won the best animated short film and I thought I should post it (although I thought the previously posted A Matter of Loaf and Death should have won).

Spectacular car chases, an intense hostage crisis, and wild animals rampaging through the city change a world constructed by heavy corporate sponsorship.

The Cat Came Back

Old Mr. Johnson makes increasingly manic attempts to rid himself of a little yellow cat that just won't stay away.  Based on the song "The Cat Came Back".

First of all, sorry for not posting in such a long time.

This short is about a piano tuner meeting a musical artist he once played with and really enjoyed when he was a young man in Cuba. They begin to form a stronger relationship through music.

A man with schizophrenia visits his therapist who tries to treat his ailment.

George Lucas in Love

Just how did George Lucas ever come up the Star Wars trilogy?  Well this short film explains it.  Actually, it's not a boring documentary or anything, it's pretty funny and it's a parody so... watch it, it's good.

One Man Band

With one coin to make a wish at the piazza fountain, a peasant girl encounters two competing street performers who's prefer the coin find its way into their tips jars. The little girl, Tippy, is caught in the middle as a musical dual ensues between the one-man-bands.

Jasper, an aerial navigator, is tormented by an accident in his past. A plague has overcome his home city, and so embarks on a journey with a crazy biologist and a harsh captain to mark a new trade route. When the ship is blown off course, the crew finds themselves commandeering an abandoned ship toward an uncharted island.

Werner and his lovely wife Mylene, are busy making their apartment festive for Christmas, when Werner’s friend from work, Sam, arrives.  Sam is not looking to share in the joys of the season however, instead he accuses Werner embezzling money from the company ever since the recent and mysterious death of the company’s managing director.

Our Time Is Up

A well-known therapist discovers he has six months to live and decides to change his life around.  He becomes brutally honest with all of his patients thinking nothing matters anymore so he should do whatever he wants.

Zombeer

A drunken brew master has embarrassed the brewery for the last time, being exiled to the lonely late-night shift; but he doesn't let this stop him from drinking. One night, after drinking too much he leans over a big pot, falls in, and dies.

The Last Farm

A farmer and his wife live in the last farm in his region of Iceland. His wife dies few days before they are scheduled to leave the farm for a retirement home. The farmer keeps the death a secret from his daughter who is coming to pick them up, and concocts a plan, revealed in the last scene.

Boundin'

You can't help but love Pixar, they always make such great short films with really good morals.  Oh and the narration is great.  But anyway:
A lamb full of pride and dignity gets up every day to dance before all of the creatures around his little house.  Until one day a man comes and shaves the lamb and with the wool, takes his dignity.  The lamb sulks about until a wise jackalope comes to teach him a valuable lesson.

Ralph does not clear the snow from the outside steps after his wife asks him to.  The mail man breaks his neck on the steps and dies, and Ralph attempts to cover up the accident

A young man has trouble waking up in the morning so he sets multiple alarms to keep him awake during his morning routine. (Animated)

Six Shooter

The film follows Donnelly, a man whose wife has died unexpectedly, on an ill-fated train ride to Dublin. Donnelly finds himself in a cabin with a demented young man who taunts a couple mourning the loss of their infant son and expresses no sadness regarding the recent death of his own mother. Begrudgingly, Donnelly begins to take comfort in the boy’s detachment. But before the end of the journey, he makes a horrific discovery about his travel companion that propels the film towards a bloodbath of a conclusion. 

Ausreisser (The Runaway)

This next short film comes to us in three parts because I couldn't find it all together on the internet and it's pretty long, but it's really good! So watch it!

At 7:10 AM, Walter Dahlmann prepares for an interview with a potential employer. Number one, Sylvain Chomet is just as cool, if not cooler than Wallace and Gromit (sorry, Brian).
Anyways, The Old Lady and the Pigeons (in french, La Vieille Dame et les Pigeons) follows a scrawny gendarme (French police man, basically) in Paris on a search for a full stomach. While looking for food, the gendarme finds the woman responsible for feeding the area's pigeons so well they have become too fat to fly. Watching her supply the birds with cakes and food the man dreams of, he figures out a way to fool her into sharing with him.
The film has a phenomenal visual style that I could stare at all day, personally, and the music is wonderful, as well.
