Oscar Nominated Shorts!

Want to watch some of the Oscar nominated short films? Well, here you go! That's right, here are 5 of them totally free. According to my research, this is the only site on the internet which offers more than one of the Oscar nominated shorts. So be proud! I am embedding the ones I am able to embed, a lot of them you'll just have to follow a link.
The first film, Let's Pollute, I could only find in French, sadly. So you'll have to watch that one in French with no English subtitles. It's supposed to be pretty good but I'm afraid without understanding the majority of it, I cannot really say whether or not I like it.
The second film, The Confession, is about a young Irish man who goes to the confessional to confess a sin. This one has a funny twist at the end but it's relatively predictable and pretty dull as Oscar nominated films go.
The third one was pretty good: Wish 143, about a young man dieing of cancer who's last wish is to get laid. A very interesting request that no one can seem to fulfill, or want to fulfill for that matter. I found the ending to be especially good.
This next one I cannot embed because you need special permission or something like that to watch it if I do embed it so I will just leave a link after the break. Madagascar, a Journey Diary is just what it sounds like, an animated video diary about someone's expedition through Madagascar. The story overall is pretty good but what really strikes me as great is the visual point of view and the animating techniques.
The last one is a bit difficult to show you, I will post links with an explanation of the problems along with the links. The Gruffalo is actually my personal favorite of the 5 I am posting here, it is a fable about a mouse who is able to escape being eaten many times over by telling a very clever lie, all told by a mother squirrel to her two children. Wonderfully narrated by Helena Bonham-Carter and very elegantly animated, a must watch if I do say so myself. Well, that is it for now, I will be posting a whole lot more shorts very soon. I hate finding really good shorts that I know I've seen before but finding out that I've never posted them. Well, here's one of those.
A woman is following her daily schedule, going to a restaurant at 7:35 in the morning for her breakfast, not doing anything out of the ordinary until she realizes to her horror that all of the other patrons of the restaurant are being held hostage. Suddenly, the bad guy starts singing to the woman and forcing the other patrons to do the same in this dark, romantic, strangely comedic short film.

The Wilderness Downtown

Ok so this short film is very different from anyone you've ever seen, I guarantee it. It's really interesting, though.
So for the summary.... I guess a younger you (as in the person who is watching the short) is running around your hometown. And it's kind of a music video at the same time. Very strange. But it's pretty cool, too. Make sure to have nothing else open on your computer when you watch this and also make sure not to click anything while this is running (except maybe to minimize a not-browser-based pop-up program).

Your Lucky Day

An old man happens to have chosen the winning numbers for the local lottery, winning a multi-million dollar prize. Suddenly, he becomes the target of a seemingly petty thief that just happened to be in the store, making his rounds so to say, who holds up the old man, with a gun, demanding the lottery ticket. Gun battles, cover-up plots, and murders ensue as the patrons of the store become involved in a fight for their lives.

Just a note: it is not very often that I happen upon a short of such great value that is not AA winning or anything like that. This was just a lucky find on a blog that I regularly visit. Hopefully you will like it as much as I did. Although, I do have to say, I am a sucker for violence and plot twists so it could be just a personal preference that makes this short so alluring. Anyway, I hope you enjoy. Here is the blog if you would like to check it out. You may notice that many of the shorts that I feature, if not most, are also covered on this blog, and are covered in much more depth than I ever do with my little summaries. So I figure I would give my extreme gratitude to the writers of this blog; something that is well overdue.

Now this may sound pretty boring but I actually found it to be very interesting. The way it is told, revealing only portions of the story at a time as if keeping a secret and the way animation is used to tell the story are just great.

So this one I could only find in parts, sorry about that. But just like my last post, this one is really great. This one didn't win but was a nominee for the 2009 Live Action Short Film Oscar.
Thomas, 25, unemployed and still living at home with his parents in Sweden, considers himself a big-time magician. Attempting his trick on and before his parents in the living room, Thomas constantly has to revise his act. When a pretty nurse moves in next door, Thomas turns on his awkward charms and attracts her with his magic.

I've finally found it online! This is a really amazing short film, winner of the 2009 Oscar for Live Action Short Films.
This short begins with the arrival of two new tenants into an apartment building, a very common occurrence, but what the two men don't realize is what happened before they arrived at the apartment complex. Guns, drugs, murders, and a little old lady make this film one crazed and unexpected thrill ride where every second something happens to take you by complete surprise. I really suggest you watch this.

I actually stumbled upon this one in the archives of this art blog I occasionally go on. This short a great animation with a wonderful combination of 2D and 3D effects.

A great flood has devastated a small town and the survivors are left searching for their loved ones. One survivor washes ashore, and the town skeptics believe him to be the devil. He begins constructing a boat to sail to the underwater afterlife to be reunited with his lost lover. Slowly the various townsfolk come to his side as they yield to hope of bringing back their loved ones. One by one, they begin to bring their most precious items to help construct the boat then all hop aboard for the journey out to sea.

So first I have to say, I really enjoyed this film. It is really really good and I definitely suggest you watch it. It is very sad though so if you don't want to watch a sad film, come back later when you do want to. Because you're going to watch this.
Anyway:

Three girls celebrate New Years together in a cancer ward. They all have had recent developments in their cancer so they must stay at the ward while most of the other patients are at home with their parents. The three girls become great friends and swap stories of what it is like to cope with their disease. A hospital is what you make of it- it can be very depressing or it can be a new, great adventure to a better life and better relationships.
Dutch with English subtitles (It's pretty long by the way)

The girl get progressively sicker and when she dies, the wigmaker goes to her grave and makes a wig from it.

Billy and his Mom live next door to a man, Dennis, who clearly has something up with him. He spends his time knocking on the wall, driving his mom crazy. Mom and son think he's a retard. But Billy likes to torment him and hence Dennis's banging, you get the feeling that the situation has gone on years before the film begins. As Billy's antics get bigger so do Billy's own fears which are not too far behind.

Tar Boy

In a world where robots rule, two classes are formed: the slave robots and the rich robots. The rich robots put the slave robots to work for some time but eventually figure out a way to do their work without them and throw all of the slave robots into a tar pit. But the memory chips of the slave robots all survived and the angry memories collect themselves into one being who arises from the tar: Tar Boy! Bent on revenge, Tar Boy hunts down to kill all of the rich robots that doomed the lives of the slave robots.
